Assured Marine Survey Ltd. is a small marine surveying business in Nanaimo, BC. We collect only what we need to answer your enquiry and survey your boat, we don't sell it, and we follow British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

What we collect

  • When you use the "Request a survey" form: the survey type, your name, your phone number or email, and anything you tell us about the vessel (make, model, year, length, where it is, whether it's in the water) and your message.
  • When you call or email us: whatever you choose to share, such as your contact details and information about the vessel and the purchase, insurance or claim.
  • During a survey: details about the vessel and its condition, photographs, documents you or the owner provide, and the names and contact details of the people we deal with (for example a buyer, seller, broker or insurer).
  • Basic technical information: like any website, our web server briefly records your IP address and browser type with each visit, and the request form uses your IP address to block repeated spam.

How we use it

  • To reply to you, quote and book a survey, and carry it out.
  • To write and deliver the survey report, and to answer questions about it afterwards.
  • To keep business, accounting and tax records.
  • To keep the website secure and stop spam.

We don't sell or rent personal information, and we don't use it for advertising. We share a survey report only with you, or with others you ask us to send it to (such as your insurer or lender), or where the law requires it.

Who else handles it

We use a few trusted services to run the business. Some of them may store information outside Canada, where it may be subject to the laws of that country.

  • Google Gmail: form requests and emails arrive in our Gmail inbox.
  • Hosting Nation: hosts this website and sends the form to our inbox.
  • Google reCAPTCHA: checks that the request form is being used by a person and not a bot. It collects information about your device and how you use the page, under Google's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
  • Google Fonts: supplies the typefaces on this site, so your browser connects to Google to load them.
  • Our accountant and payment providers, for invoicing and bookkeeping.

Cookies & your browser

This website doesn't use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, so you won't see a cookie banner. Your browser remembers one thing on your own device: whether you chose the light or dark look. Google reCAPTCHA may set its own cookies when the request form is used.

Photos & sample reports

Photos in our gallery and the sample report show vessels and survey findings, not people. Before we publish anything from a real survey, we remove or hide owners' names, boat names, registration and hull numbers, addresses and anything else that could identify a client, unless the client has agreed. If you see something of yours you'd like taken down, contact us and we'll remove it.

How long we keep it

Survey requests that don't go ahead are deleted within two years. Survey reports and business records are kept for at least six years, as required for tax records, and may be kept longer as a record of our professional work. When we no longer need information, we delete or securely destroy it.

Your choices

You can ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it where we're not required to keep it. You can also withdraw your consent to us using your information, although we may then be unable to complete a survey. We'll reply within 30 days.
